Morocco’s Cereal Import Costs Soar Amid Global Food Price Surge

Like several countries around the world, Morocco is also suffering from the rise in food prices caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine. At the end of May, the country spent 15.8 billion dirhams on its cereal supply compared to 10.7 billion dirhams a year earlier.
This significant increase in Morocco’s import bill is related to a number of products such as wheat, barley and soybean oil, according to the recent note from the Foreign Exchange Office.
According to the figures, the barley bill has seen the biggest increase, going from 325 million dirhams in 2021 to 3 billion dirhams this year. This situation is attributed to the drought that characterizes the current agricultural season, it is specified.
As for the import of soybean oil, it has also recorded a strong increase this year. Its bill went from 1.8 billion dirhams at the end of May 2021 to 3 billion dirhams at the end of May last year, an increase of 62.2%.
As for wheat, the value of imports over the first five months of the year amounted to around 9.8 billion dirhams, compared to 8.6 billion dirhams a year ago, an increase of 14.8%.
