Morocco Lawmakers Probe Restaurant Hygiene After Worm Incident Shocks Tourists

Following the discovery of earthworms in a tagine in a restaurant located in the Ouzoud waterfalls valley in the Azilal region, the parliamentary group of the Popular Movement (MP) questioned the Minister of the Interior on the measures of sanitary and hygienic control of establishments where meals are served for a fee.

This discovery "undermines the reputation of Moroccan tourism, which has suffered so much over the past two years due to the closure," notes MP Mohamed Ouzzine, a member of the MP parliamentary group, who sent a written question to the Minister of the Interior asking him to reveal the procedures and preventive measures his department will take to strengthen the control of products offered in restaurants and fast food outlets, and thereby protect the health and safety of the consumer.

"As summer approaches, domestic and foreign tourism is flourishing, and demand for restaurants is increasing, urgently raising the issue of prevention and control, in order to avoid food poisoning," the elected official stressed.

Following the complaint filed by the couple who discovered earthworms in a tagine dish they were served, the royal gendarmerie of the Azilal region, after inspection, closed the restaurant for serious breaches of health rules. According to a source, the restaurant owner will be brought before the public prosecutor this coming week and will be prosecuted at liberty, reported Alyaoum24.
