Morocco Lawmakers to Consider Amnesty Bill for Rif Protest Detainees

Lawmakers will soon be examining a new bill related to the detainees of the Hirak of the Rif. The text filed by the Secretary General of the Unified Socialist Party (PSU), Nabila Mounib, proposes to grant them a general amnesty.
This draft law, shelved since 2018, has been exhumed by the deputy, very involved in the defense of the Hirak detainees. Nabila Mounib is calling for the release of all detainees to "turn the page on the marginalization, exclusion and oppression that the region has suffered."
"The presence of the region’s young people in prison and the severe sentences handed down against them, simply because of their demands that the government itself has recognized as legitimate and fair, is unacceptable and requires intervention," states the text of the bill, filed since February 17.
For the initiator, these young people "have significant capacities and energies that would be useful to employ in the service of the country and the development and prosperity of the region."
