Morocco Lawmakers Push to Ban Child Marriage, Sparking National Debate

The deputies of the Rassemblement national indépendant (RNI) have just relaunched the debate on child marriage by tabling a bill that provides for its abolition.
The RNI is ready to abolish Article 20 of the Family Code which allows the judge to authorize the marriage of minors. According to the website of the First Chamber, it is the parliamentary group led by the deputy Idriss Chraibi who tabled the bill to repeal this article, reports Medias24.
The legal age for marriage is 18 years old, but through Article 20, the Code has created an opening allowing the judge to give his consent for the marriage of the boy or the young girl, by "reasoned decision specifying the interest and the reasons justifying this marriage, after having heard the parents of the minor or his legal representative, and after having resorted to a medical expertise or carried out a social investigation".
It is therefore the abolition of this derogation that the RNI proposes in the face of the persistence of the phenomenon. Despite numerous awareness campaigns, child marriage continues to be celebrated, forcing children to give up their dreams and ambitions.
