Morocco Imposes Steep Fines for Overstaying Vehicle Import Limits
Friday 14 June 2019, by
The Moroccan customs authorities allow the admission of a vehicle for a maximum period of six months, during which its owner has the right to circulate freely in Morocco without being disturbed.
This vehicle must necessarily leave the territory before the 180 days, unless its owner wishes to clear it and pay the related taxes and duties.
In case of exceeding the limit, the owner must spontaneously present himself to the customs service to pay a penalty, the amount of which depends on the duration of the overrun:
• 1000 dirhams for an overrun of 30 days or less;
• 2500 dirhams for an overrun of 30 to 60 days;
• 5000 dirhams for an overrun of 60 days to 06 months;
• 10,000 dirhams for an overrun of 06 months or more.
The vehicle that has exceeded the temporary admission period cannot circulate without the authorization of the Administration, it is warned.
Note that this year, Customs has listened to the grievances of MREs, particularly regarding the persons authorized to drive the vehicle. It has therefore been decided:
• the lifting, in the event of continuous stay, of the condition of interruption of stay of at least 24 hours to be entitled to the balance of temporary admission of a vehicle for the current year. Local officials (Orderers) now authorize this type of extension, without the vehicle importer having to leave the national territory;
• the driving of a vehicle registered abroad, placed under the temporary admission regime, is extended to ascendants, in addition to spouses and descendants, also residing abroad and, this, in dispensation of power of attorney.
