Morocco’s High-Speed Train Shifts to Green Energy, Aiming to Cut CO₂ Emissions

Since yesterday, Saturday, January 1st, the Moroccan high-speed train, Al Boraq, is gradually switching to green energy. The aim is to replace the electrical consumption of the national rail network with clean energy.
According to a press release from ONCF, the green transformation will be carried out gradually. With this new measure, the Office hopes to improve its carbon footprint in the short term, the equivalent of 120,000 tons of CO₂ avoided each year, or 4 million trees planted, reports La MAP.
The energy transformation is part of the national energy strategy conducted under the impetus of King Mohammed VI, with the aim of making Morocco a country committed to the development of wind and solar energy.
In addition to the gradual shift to green energy, ONCF is carrying out several other initiatives, including the gradual certification of railway sites according to ISO 14001 and 50001 standards, the systematic realization of impact studies for major projects, the annual evaluation of the carbon footprint, the adoption of an eco-driving system and the use of alternative photovoltaic energies at the level of stations and buildings, the press release states, announcing the imminent launch of marketing actions to encourage customers to play their role in this energy transformation.
