Morocco: Giant Wave Alert

A red alert has been issued by the General Directorate of Meteorology for the Atlantic coast. From Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning, dangerous maritime conditions are expected, combining a strong swell and high tides, with waves exceeding six meters.

Caution is advised on the Atlantic coast. The DGM has placed the area between Mehdia and Cap Ghir under red alert for the period from Tuesday, December 16 at 8 pm to Wednesday, December 17 at 6 am. This alert level indicates a high risk for all maritime and port activities, as well as for coastal residential areas, due to waves ranging in height between 5 and 6.5 meters.

This phenomenon is exacerbated by a calendar coincidence with the high tides. Houcine Youabed, from the DGM, specifies that water heights of 3 to 3.20 meters are expected simultaneously. This conjunction between the cyclonic swell and the high tide could favor the breaking of the waves and cause localized flooding on the low-lying parts of the coast.

At the origin of this agitation, an active depression located in the North Atlantic generates strong winds that propel this swell towards the Moroccan coasts.
