Alert: 8-meter waves expected on the Moroccan coasts this weekend
The sea is set to be particularly dangerous over a large part of the Moroccan coastline starting this Friday afternoon, according to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
In a statement, the DGM indicates that the Atlantic Ocean will be "agitated to strong", with very high waves expected along the entire coastline from Tangier to Agadir. These waves, coming from the west to the northwest, should reach between 6 and 8 meters. An episode that could seriously complicate conditions along the coast, especially in the most exposed areas.
The Strait of Gibraltar will not be spared: the wave height could reach between 4 and 6 meters there. On the Mediterranean coast, from Jebha to Saïdia, the swell is announced between 3 and 5 meters. The General Directorate of Meteorology specifies that the peak of this episode is expected on Saturday.
Another element to watch out for: a high tide is also expected on the Atlantic coasts during the same period, with a level between 3 and 3.8 meters, especially in the early morning and evening.
In parallel, strong, sometimes violent, westerly winds are expected from Friday afternoon. They will affect the Atlantic coasts, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean coasts, and could last until Sunday afternoon.
Faced with this situation, the General Directorate of Meteorology calls for "more caution and vigilance". It recommends avoiding any maritime activity and staying away from beaches and docks during periods of high swell, in order to limit the risks.
