Giant Waves Threaten Moroccan Coast, Authorities Issue Alert

The Moroccan coasts are placed on alert due to an episode of strong waves announced by the Ministry of Equipment and Water. The phenomenon is expected to start on Monday afternoon.
Significant swells, with maximum expected heights of 6.5 meters, are expected. They will come from the west and northwest sectors.
Two areas are identified as particularly at risk:
• The coastal sector between Tanger Med and Cap Spartel.
• The Atlantic facade, from Cap Spartel (Tangier) to Cap Hadid (Essaouira).
In these sectors, the peak intensity of the waves is expected between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
The alert also mentions the presence of strong southwest winds. These winds will first affect the Atlantic coast between Tangier and Essaouira from Monday morning, then extend to the strait area in the evening.
The ministry draws attention to the combined risk of strong waves and high tides. The latter will take place on Monday and Tuesday, from 4:30 a.m. to 5:20 a.m., then from 4:50 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sea levels of 3.20 to 3.80 meters are expected, which could lead to localized submersions.
An improvement is expected from Tuesday afternoon.
