Morocco Emerges as Top Foreign Destination for French Holiday Travelers

As the Christmas holidays approach, the French are preparing to storm the roads, train stations and airports. While the mountains remain a great classic, sun holidays, especially in Morocco, continue to attract many vacationers.

Indeed, according to data from Atout France, more than half of the French (53%) intend to go on vacation during the end-of-year holidays, and Morocco seems to be coming out on top.

Metropolitan France remains the favorite destination of the French (80%), but the desire to get away abroad is gaining ground. 18% of the French plan to cross borders for their Christmas holidays, an increase of 3 points compared to 2023. Among the destinations that are gaining momentum, Morocco stands out, particularly on online booking platforms.

Expedia notes a significant increase in searches for Morocco, alongside other sunny destinations such as Senegal and Southeast Asia. "Asia and Africa are particularly popular this winter, as the cost of staying there is often lower than in Europe," analyzes a spokesperson for the platform. Kayak confirms this trend and observes a 25% increase in searches for Marrakech compared to last year. The ochre city is thus among the most sought-after destinations by the French for the Christmas holidays, alongside Bangkok, New York and London.

The appeal of Morocco is explained by several factors. The country offers a pleasant winter climate, with mild and sunny temperatures, ideal for escaping the gloom. In addition, Morocco offers a wide diversity of landscapes and activities from north to south.

Despite the rise in prices, the French do not seem ready to give up their Christmas holidays. Whether in the mountains or in the sun, the important thing for them is to recharge their batteries and enjoy the end-of-year festivities.
