Morocco Edges Togo 1-0 in CHAN 2020 Group C Opener

The Atlas Lions plucked the Togo hawks this Monday, January 18, during the first match of group C, counting for the CHAN 2020 currently being held in Cameroon. The only goal of the match was scored on a penalty by Yahya Jabrane.
Morocco wanted to honor its title as the previous CHAN champion, by winning its first match as Cameroon, Mali and the DRC did on Sunday. Before the kick-off of the match, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Jamal Jaafari, former president of the Libyan Football Federation and former member of the CAF Executive Committee, whose death was announced on Monday. He was suffering from Covid-19.
The Moroccans largely dominated the 90 minutes of play, forcing Togo to concede on a penalty obtained when the Togolese Kokouvi Dodzi Amekoubi collided with Yahya Jabrane in the penalty area. Yahya Jabrane did not hesitate to convert this opportunity into a goal, the only one of this match, scored in the 27th minute of play.
Pending the result of the Rwanda-Uganda match, Morocco takes the lead in group C. The next match of the Atlas Lions against the Rwandans is scheduled for January 22.
