Morocco Condemns Quran Burning in Sweden, Calls for Strict Punishment

Swedish extremists burned the Quran on Saturday, causing a wave of reactions around the world. Morocco, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called on Sweden to punish with the utmost rigor this act that undermines the sacred symbols of religions and the feelings of Muslims.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad expressed its surprise at the authorization of this act by the Swedish authorities. It called on the law enforcement to intervene to prevent any attack on the Holy Quran and the sacred religious symbols of Muslims.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Nasser Bourita, stressed that this odious act offends the sensibilities of more than a billion Muslims and is likely to stoke anger and hatred between religions and peoples. It recalled that this act had already caused violent clashes in Sweden in 2020 when the leader of an extreme right-wing party had committed the same act.

Last year, far-right supremacists also provoked riots by burning Qurans. Morocco has therefore called on Sweden to take measures to prevent such actions that can cause unrest and divisions in society. Morocco insists on respecting religious symbols and the feelings of all followers, regardless of their religion.
