Morocco’s $1 Billion Urban Transit Revolution Reshapes Cities

With a global envelope of nearly 11 billion dirhams, this ambitious plan provides for the acquisition of nearly 3,800 new buses. In total, 84 cities and urban concentrations, distributed among 37 delegating authorities, will benefit from this strategic initiative.

The first phase of the program is already underway and its concrete effects will be visible very soon. According to Younès El Kasmi, governor director at the Ministry of the Interior, about 1,000 new buses will be received between late October and early November, out of a total of 1,487 planned for this phase.

It concerns the large agglomerations of Tangier, Tetouan, Fez, Rabat, Benslimane, Marrakech and Agadir, as well as the surrounding cities, thus covering 29 municipalities for this initial stage.

The operation of this new fleet will be entrusted to professional operators through a new delegated management model, focused on service quality, innovation and performance, said Mr. El Kasmi.

The program will then continue with two other phases to extend the modernization. The second will concern 24 cities, including Dakhla, Guelmim and Oujda. The third will target 31 other localities, including Casablanca, Meknes and Laayoune, with an additional 1,482 buses planned.
