Rabat will have electric buses, they will go as far as Salé and Témara
The city of Rabat has been selected by the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) to benefit from technical and financial support. This program will help the Moroccan capital transform its climate plans into a concrete green infrastructure project, focused on electric mobility.
The project consists of deploying 30 new electric buses that will run on a new north-south express line connecting Salé, Rabat and Témara. In addition, the project plans to install photovoltaic panels on the roofs of three bus depots, combining electric mobility and renewable energy.
The mayor of Rabat, Fatiha El Moudni, welcomed this selection. "This essential project is a key step in the implementation of our strategic vision for sustainable urban mobility," she said, describing it as a "structuring investment designed to improve the quality of life" of citizens and a "pioneering model in Morocco." The initiative aims to offer a "more reliable, quieter and cleaner" transport service and will allow for the testing of innovative governance models.
An international initiative for urban climate
The announcement was made at the C40 Mayors World Summit in Rio de Janeiro, which celebrated the tenth anniversary of the CFF. Alongside Rabat, three other cities in South America have been selected for similar projects: Belo Horizonte and São Paulo in Brazil, and Cartagena in Colombia. Ingrid Simon, co-director of the CFF, welcomed these partnerships aimed at "creating cleaner and healthier environments."
The C40 Cities Finance Facility, implemented by the German GIZ and C40 since 2015, is a structure that helps cities in the South prepare infrastructure projects and connect them to international climate finance. Supported by the German and British governments, it has established partnerships with more than 30 cities and aims to mobilize more than one billion euros in investments by 2030.
