Transport in Fez: the end of the ordeal for users, 620 million dirhams on the table

The first vehicles are now plying the arteries of the spiritual capital. Gone are the days of dilapidation, making way for technology: these 12-meter buses incorporate connected ticketing systems allowing for online purchases and are adapted for people with reduced mobility.

This commissioning marks the beginning of a complete overhaul of the network. In total, 268 buses have been received to cover not only the urban center, but also thirteen peripheral municipalities located within a 40-kilometer radius. The objective is to break the isolation of the outlying neighborhoods and facilitate access to hospitals and commercial areas.

To finance this break with the often-criticized old management models, the local authorities had to invest massively. The overall envelope exceeds 620 million dirhams, including a contribution of 230 million from the regional council.

This new scheme, which is based on the municipal ownership of the fleet, will not stop at the gates of Fez. The president of the region, Abdelouahed El Ansari, has confirmed that this investment program will soon extend to the cities of Meknes, Taounate and Taza.
