Morocco: 1,000 additional kilometers of highways

The Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, took advantage of an oral question session at the House of Representatives this Monday to lift the veil on the major road projects to come. Between strengthening the highway network and opening up the most remote areas, the objective is clear: to improve mobility throughout the country.

Unblocking rural areas remains an absolute priority for the State. The minister recalled that the second rural road program has already allowed the construction of around 22,000 kilometers of tracks and roads. The idea is no longer just to build, but also to make it sustainable: a specific maintenance plan has been launched to maintain 500 kilometers of unclassified roads each year, thus preventing villages from becoming isolated again.

To go further, new agreements have been signed to extend this network and guarantee the inhabitants of remote areas decent access to basic services.

Towards 1,000 additional kilometers of highways

In terms of structural infrastructure, Morocco is thinking big. While the current network already includes 2,299 kilometers of highways, the government is now planning to add 1,000 additional kilometers. This large-scale project aims to improve road safety and better connect the major economic regions of the Kingdom.

The Drâa-Tafilalet region will benefit from massive investments to emerge from its isolation. The most impressive project concerns the axis connecting Meknès to Rissani (via national road 13/17). This 386-kilometer project, whose studies are nearing completion, should cost nearly 6.8 billion dirhams.

Other black spots in the region will also be addressed:

• Errachidia-Amskki: a 16-kilometer section will be modernized for a budget of 120 million dirhams.

• Tizi N’telghmet: National Road 13 will be duplicated over 9 kilometers (139 million dirhams) to secure this often difficult mountain passage.
