The Moroccan national football team defeated Tanzania 2-0 in a match played on Tuesday at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
After a false start due to the cancellation of their match against Eritrea, Walid Regragui’s protégés showed unwavering determination from the start, seeking to take the lead quickly. Their Tanzanian opponent, buoyed by a previous victory against Niger, aimed to create a surprise against a Moroccan team now feared in Africa and crowned by its run in Qatar.
The match started with a penalty missed by Achraf Hakimi, but this only increased the Moroccan pressure. Dominant, the Atlas Lions finally found the breakthrough thanks to a spectacular shot by Hakim Ziyech in the 28th minute. Tanzanian efforts to equalize were met with an impregnable Moroccan defense, leaving the score at 1-0 at half-time.
The start of the second half saw the Moroccans increase their lead with a goal from Youssef En-Nesyri (assisted by a Tanzanian). Tanzania, pushed back into their trenches, suffered a blow with the expulsion of Novatus Dismas. Although numerically superior, the Moroccans failed to widen the gap, betrayed by a certain haste and lack of finishing.
This victory places Morocco at the top of its group with three points, ahead of Tanzania, Niger and Zambia, while Congo Brazzaville is at the bottom of the standings.
