Morocco Arrests 17 After Achoura Celebrations Turn Violent in Multiple Cities

During the Achoura festivities in several Moroccan cities, elements of the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) arrested several individuals in the night of August 7 to 8 who were allegedly involved in illegal gatherings, violence, fires and damage to public and private property.
In total, 17 people, including 8 minors, were arrested by the security forces in Rabat, Salé, Casablanca, Marrakech, El Jadida, Beni Mellal, Tangier, Mahdia and Témara.
They are said to have damaged 11 National Security vehicles, a vehicle belonging to Civil Protection, as well as 13 private cars parked on public roads. The defendants are also said to have physically assaulted a police lieutenant-colonel in Marrakech and a civil protection agent in the city of Beni Mellal.
