Moroccan Woman Arrested in $200,000 Online Retail Fraud Scheme

A network of scammers managed to divert tens of thousands of euros (190,000) from the online commerce company Cdiscount in a year and a half. Among them, a Moroccan woman.
The online commerce company Cdiscount discovered in 2018 suspicious movements on several customer accounts domiciled in Avignon (Vaucluse). According to the investigations carried out by the police over the period from July 2017 to December 2018, these customers had their orders systematically refunded on the grounds that the delivery had not been made.
They succeeded 90 times, before attracting the attention of the company’s security service, which launched an internal investigation with the delivery companies, which provided proof that the deliveries had been made.
However, the fictitious orders did not stop during the month of November 2018. But they were no longer executed by the company, which filed a complaint in December 2018.
A judicial investigation was opened and allowed the police to locate numerous suspects, from the Saint-Chamand district of Avignon.
Two suspects, a 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, originally from Morocco, were arrested on Tuesday. Many diverted objects were seized after the search of their homes. The investigation is ongoing.
