Sand Extraction Company Faces Blackmail and Protests in Morocco

A company commissioned by the High Commission for Water and Forests to extract sand and gravel from the Oued Oum Errabi has been the victim of blackmail. Individuals have demanded 600,000 dirhams from it to allow it to complete the work.
The investigation was entrusted to the royal gendarmerie brigade of Khmiss Mtouh, near El Jadida, in order to determine the circumstances of this case and identify the authors of the blackmail, who moreover prevent the construction site from progressing by inciting the local residents to demonstrate.
The legal representative of the company, who supported his statement with two official reports drawn up by a bailiff, presented the investigators with an audio recording in which the suspects demand the amount of 600,000 dirhams in exchange for the authorization to exploit the river.
According to the daily Assabah, the suspects would be mandated by an individual from Casablanca. For the moment, the investigation is ongoing, pending new elements likely to shed light on this case.
