Moroccan Police Fire Warning Shot to Stop Reckless Driver Evading Checkpoints

A police inspector from the Regional Security of Ouarzazate was forced to draw his weapon on Tuesday to fire a warning shot during the arrest of the driver of a clandestine transport vehicle who had forcibly crossed checkpoints. The offender endangered the safety of the police officers and caused material damage to public property.

The offending driver, active in clandestine transportation between cities and transporting four passengers for 600 dirhams each, had refused to comply with a first checkpoint of the Royal Gendarmerie services, before forcing the national security barrier installed at the entrance to the city of Ouarzazate, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).

During his arrest, the suspect deliberately collided with three police vehicles, causing material damage, the same source added, stating that these actions prompted the police officer to fire a warning shot in the air to slow down the suspect.

Pending the determination of the exact circumstances of the commission of these criminal acts, the driver and the four passengers were taken into custody.
