Moroccan lawyer shot in Spain after winning case

Spanish police arrested on Sunday, July 19 the alleged perpetrator of the shooting that seriously wounded a lawyer of Moroccan origin four days earlier in El Ejido, in the province of Almería.

The suspect was arrested around 5:50 p.m. aboard a train traveling in Murcia heading toward Alicante. Considered dangerous and potentially armed, he had been sought since the assault thanks in particular to the use of technological means by investigators.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, July 15, around 9:30 a.m., on Granada Street. Emergency services had been alerted that a woman had been shot. Local police, the National Police and rescue services were immediately dispatched to the scene.

The victim was reportedly shot with a .32 caliber weapon. Contrary to initial reports of minor injuries, the lawyer remains hospitalized with a guarded prognosis, according to Diario de Almería.

A presumed judicial revenge

According to initial investigation findings, the suspect allegedly wanted to take revenge after losing a lawsuit against the party represented by the lawyer. However, the exact motive will need to be confirmed by ongoing investigations.

The man is notably suspected of aggravated attempted murder. He is also being investigated for serious threats allegedly made to his former employer.

The National Police are continuing their investigations to reconstruct the preparation of the assault, determine the origin of the weapon used, and verify whether the suspect received assistance during his escape.

The Almería Bar Association condemned this attack on one of its members in the strongest terms. Its board of directors and its president, Juan Luis de Aynat, expressed their support for the lawyer and indicated they are closely monitoring the evolution of her health condition.
