Moroccan Expats Denied Entry to Upscale Tangier Restaurant Over Traditional Dress

Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) were turned away at the entrance of a luxury restaurant on the Tangier corniche because they were wearing traditional Moroccan clothing.
In a statement to the Al3omk website, MREs revealed that they were denied entry to this restaurant located on the Tangier corniche because of their attire. They were wearing the Gandoura and the Djellaba, which are traditional Moroccan garments. Outraged, they call on the authorities to intervene to put an end to what they consider to be the "anarchy" prevailing in the sector. According to them, these behaviors could have a negative impact on the tourism sector on which the Moroccan government is betting heavily.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in Morocco this year. Last July, young women were turned away at the entrance of a famous Asian restaurant in Rabat because they were wearing the hijab. Moroccan journalist Mohamed Ouamoussi, who recounted the facts in a Facebook post, explained that a member of the royal family, present in the establishment at the time, had to intervene and forced the establishment’s managers to apologize to the veiled women. But the latter ultimately decided to change restaurants.
