Moroccan Court Denies Release for Prominent Plastic Surgeon Accused of Fraud

Friday 22 April 2022, by Ginette

The chamber of the Casablanca Court of Appeal has rejected the request for provisional release filed by the lawyers of plastic surgeon Hassan Tazi.

The famous doctor Hassan Tazi, his wife, his brother and two employees of the clinic are being held in detention at the Oukacha prison. They will remain there, at least, until April 27, the date of their hearing by the investigating judge of the Casablanca Court of Appeal in this case where serious charges weigh against the defendants. They are accused of fraud, forgery, counterfeiting, and use of forged documents in connection with medical care invoices.

Contrary to rumors, no plaintiff has filed a complaint against Dr. Hassan Tazi to date, even though it had been announced that a human rights defense organization would join the case as a civil party.

The accused, according to the DGSN, would have formed a criminal gang and distinguished themselves in the collection of sums of money from benefactors under the pretext of paying the hospitalization costs of destitute patients treated in the clinic where the majority of the suspects practice. And to succeed in their plan, they fraudulently inflated the invoices in order to extort large sums of money from the businessmen and women targeted by the main defendant, who used the precariousness of certain patients to defraud the donors with the complicity of her accomplices.
