Moroccan Bus Stations Flout COVID-19 Measures as Eid Travel Costs Surge

The Moroccan Federation of Consumer Rights observed this week the non-compliance with preventive measures and the increase in transport costs by road carriers in Casablanca-Settat.

On the occasion of Eid Mawlid Ennabaoui, a day of great influx of travelers par excellence in several bus stations, the observation is distressing. According to Bouazza Kharrati, president of the Moroccan Federation of Consumer Rights, the restrictive measures imposed by the competent authorities to counter Covid-19 are not respected at the level of certain bus stations. This situation has led to the congestion of bus stations, the primary factor in the spread of the virus.

According to him, in addition to the non-compliance with these measures, the carriers have increased the prices of travel tickets. "How long will this anomaly continue? In addition to emptying the pockets of consumers, it is the perfect vector for the spread of the coronavirus epidemic?" questioned the Moroccan Federation of Consumer Rights.

According to Hespress, passengers have denounced in recent days many buses that greatly exceed the capacity limit set at 75% by the authorities. Some even mentioned their fear of a possible transmission of the coronavirus infection due to the lack of distancing in these public transport vehicles in the Casablanca-Settat region, the epicenter of coronavirus in Morocco.
