Mini tsunamis" in northern Morocco
An exceptional rise in water levels, described by some as "mini tsunamis", has hit the coastline south of Tangier, causing flooding up to the limits of the Ibn Battouta airport. Driven by strong winds and swells exceeding five meters, this high tide has paralyzed the ports of the North and damaged many traditional fishing boats.
Coastal areas like Achakar have experienced a sudden marine incursion, with water extending into the perimeter of Tangier’s international airport. This climatic phenomenon, marked by gusts reaching 85 km/h on the Atlantic and Mediterranean facades, has made navigation impossible. The ports of Tangier, Larache and Asilah have suspended their activities, while several light boats have been broken against the quays by the force of the waves.
The General Directorate of Meteorology has maintained its orange alert, forecasting the continuation of heavy rainfall and snowfall on the reliefs. Local authorities and emergency services remain mobilized to secure inhabited areas near the shore and protect transport infrastructure. This bad weather is expected to persist in several regions for several more days.
