La Méridionale suspends Marseille–Tangier service for nine months

After five years of operation, the Massalia will therefore stop regularly connecting Marseille with Tangier Med throughout the entire low season. The suspension will last nine months, Le Marin specifies, before a resumption scheduled for June 15, 2027.

The company confirms on its official website that crossings will stop as of September 15. It explains that it wants to adapt its offering to activity that is highly concentrated in the summer season.

Travelers who have already booked a crossing after that date will be contacted individually so that a solution can be offered to them.

The Marseille–Tangier Med route was launched at the end of 2020 by La Méridionale. It had notably become an important option for MRE traveling between France and Morocco with their vehicle.

The decision comes a few months after La Méridionale’s abandonment of its Moroccan service had been mentioned, amid financial difficulties and a refocusing on Corsica. The company now explicitly states that this is neither a permanent closure nor a withdrawal from Morocco.

Another route with Tangier Med in the works

La Méridionale could even strengthen its presence in the Strait of Gibraltar. According to Le Marin, it is participating in the tender launched in Morocco for the operation of a connection between Algeciras and Tangier Med.

The process is currently suspended pending Morocco’s legislative elections on September 23 and should resume afterward. Such a service would place La Méridionale on one of the main routes used by MRE between Spain and Morocco.

The company is simultaneously seeking to return to financial balance after loss-making results in 2025. It changed management this summer, with Charles-Henry de Lignac replacing Étienne Melliani after only eight months at the helm of the company.

For travelers accustomed to the Marseille–Tangier Med route, the consequence is immediate: after September 15, they will have to turn to other connections for nine months. La Méridionale plans to return to this route for the 2027 summer season, with a resumption announced for June 15.
