New Ferry Boosts Marseille-Morocco Route: La Méridionale Expands Mediterranean Service

The shipping company La Méridionale, based in Marseille and belonging to the CMA CGM group, has announced the acquisition of a new ship, the Massalia. This purchase aims to strengthen its presence in the Mediterranean and develop its connections with Morocco.
The ship, formerly known as Normandie in the Brittany Ferries fleet, replaces the old Pelagos. It stands out with an increased capacity of 1,000 passengers, allowing the company to meet the growing demand on routes to Tanger Med. On-board services have also been modernized, including Wi-Fi connection as well as dedicated spaces for children and families.
However, before being put into service on Mediterranean routes, the Massalia required adaptation work. Previously operating in the English Channel, the ship’s ramp systems had to be modified to adjust to the absence of tides in the Mediterranean.
These technical transformations were carried out during a four-week stopover at the Marseille shipyard. The total cost of this upgrade amounted to 4 million euros, an investment that is part of the company’s strategic choice to develop its commercial and technical links with Morocco.
