GNV and Balearia: The Port of Sète Multiplies Rotations to Morocco

As summer approaches, the Port of Sète is multiplying its connections. Morocco remains the flagship destination of this booming hub, which is attracting more and more travelers from western France.

Gone are the days when Sète offered only limited access to Africa. Today, vacationers bypass Marseille or Nice to board at the foot of Mont Saint-Clair, heading directly to Morocco. GNV and Balearia companies operate two weekly rotations to Tangier Med and up to four crossings to Nador during peak season. The Italian-flagged GNV dominates this Moroccan market, with 155,000 passengers and 155 calls recorded last year.

According to a situation report compiled by Midi Libre, overall ferry traffic surged 44% in 2025 to reach 320,000 travelers. The infrastructure director, Olivier Carmes, justifies this exceptional result: "Six years ago we had only one company, we have four today"].

While Morocco is driving this growth, the overall offering is diversifying. Ships from Corsica Linea, GNV, and Algérie Ferries regularly sail to Béjaïa, Skikda, and Algiers. For 2026, Olivier Carmes hopes to cross the 300,000-passenger threshold again, while remaining "cautious about Algeria due to the nature of diplomatic relations" with France.

Since mid-April, Corsica Ferries has also opened new routes to Ajaccio and Porto Torres to meet strong regional demand. This intense commercial development is accompanied by a major ecological transition, as quay electrification continues to ensure the port’s economic future.
