Melilla Unveils High-Tech Border Surveillance System to Monitor Morocco Frontier

The city of Melilla has just equipped itself with an intelligent border control system following a collaboration between Thales, a European technology giant, and Trablisa, a Spanish security company.
Completed in the record time of less than seven months, this system represents a giant step forward in monitoring the borders with Morocco.
The system, called the Integral Surveillance System, has been installed at the Melilla Command of the Guardia Civil. Thales highlights the qualitative and quantitative improvements brought by this new system, which integrates various technologies for more effective border surveillance.
According to Miguel Bueno, the project manager, the challenges were numerous: from the complexity of deploying the equipment to the effective coordination between the different stakeholders, not to mention the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment within tight deadlines. The success of the project, he points out, is the result of close collaboration between all the parties involved, including the Melilla Guardia Civil.
The system consists of fixed surveillance stations, providing the Guardia Civil with extensive coverage for increased monitoring of land and maritime borders. Thanks to this deployment, the Guardia Civil now has high-resolution cameras, operational day and night, and various other sensors. Thales’ thermal cameras, combined with the HORUS software developed in Spain, allow centralized management and control of the entire system, ensuring optimal analysis of the collected images.
