Marrakech Marathon Marred by Public Urination Controversy

The lack of public toilets led some participants in the Marrakech International Marathon organized on Sunday to relieve themselves in the open. Images of this act, widely shared on social media, have outraged local and regional authorities as well as associations.

The president of the Marrakech-Safi region, Samir Koudar, attributes responsibility for this situation to the organizers of the Marathon. Observers, for their part, believe that this responsibility is shared, also pointing the finger at the mayor of the city, Fatima Zahra Mansouri, and the president of the region, Samir Koudar.

According to human rights activist Mohamed El Harouali, coordinator of the Marrakech-Safi region for the National Observatory for the Fight against Corruption and the Protection of Public Funds, this scandal is a "shame" for the ochre city. In a statement to Achkayen, he denounced the negligence of the organizers of this sporting event and the lack of responsibility of the authorities.

On social media, Internet users did not fail to criticize the attitude of the participants who, for lack of public toilets along the entire course of the race, had to relieve themselves in the open.
