Tangier’s 15 Million Dirham Smart Toilet Scandal: New Project Sparks Outrage Over Wasted Funds

While questions remain about the fate of the previous smart public toilets, the installation of which had cost one million dirhams, the municipality of Tangier has just launched a 15 million dirham tender for the installation of new toilets.
The information is reported by the daily Al Akhbar which informs that "the local development company (SDL) in charge of the management of this sector for the urban commune of Tangier, has indeed launched a new call for tenders for the installation of smart public toilets" and that the opening of the bids is scheduled for July 17, 2025.
This new contract is causing a lively controversy and criticism in the city in view of the scrapping of the previous smart public toilets, the installation of which had cost one million dirhams. Elected officials are calling for an administrative and financial audit to shed light on the fate of the previous toilets and to identify the responsibilities in this case, which they describe as a waste of public funds.
This accountability process will allow the municipality to "avoid the same mistakes, preserve the city’s resources and respect the population’s needs for essential services," it is specified.
