Marrakech Grand Stadium: New 46,000-Seat Football Venue for 2030

The Grand Stadium of Marrakech will close its doors this week to begin a major restructuring ahead of the 2030 World Cup. The project includes removing the athletics track and increasing the venue’s capacity.

This decision is part of Morocco’s preparations to host the 2030 World Cup alongside Portugal and Spain. Authorities are seeking to adapt the venue to the “strict specifications” imposed by FIFA. As a result, the stadium will remain completely closed until the date of the global tournament.

The project will transform the venue into a football-only stadium. The work will include removing the athletics track and demolishing part of the stands to bring spectators closer to the pitch. Total capacity will rise to approximately 46,000 seats, compared with 41,000 previously, in line with the technical observations of inspection committees.

The renovation will also affect various technical and logistical aspects to ensure the site’s official approval. During this closure, Kawkab of Marrakech, the city’s main club, will be forced to play its home matches at El Harti Stadium until the work is completed.
