Morocco inaugurates its Tangier stadium (75,600 seats) and "embarrasses" Spanish stadiums
The Moroccan national team is preparing to inaugurate this Friday the Grand Stade Ibn Battouta de Tanger, in its fully renovated version, during a friendly match against Mozambique. This spectacular renovation positions the venue as a major asset for the next Africa Cup of Nations and a serious contender for the 2030 World Cup.
The work has increased the capacity to 75,600 seats, including more than 5,800 VIP seats and boxes. The most striking transformation is the removal of the athletics track, a modification aimed at improving comfort and creating a more immersive atmosphere for spectators, in the style of modern football stadiums, according to As.com.
The renovation of the roof, carried out by Moroccan engineers in just 69 days, is also a strong point of the project. Now one of the largest in Africa, it now covers all the stands with an architectural fabric resistant to heat and wind. The venue has also been equipped with innovative outdoor lighting, giant screens and a high-power sound system, meeting FIFA standards for high-definition broadcasts.
A stadium to compete with Spain for the 2030 World Cup
This renovation is not only intended for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco clearly displays its ambition to compete with Spain for the hosting of the most important matches of the 2030 World Cup. This infrastructure "once again embarrasses the Spanish stadiums," writes the same source.
Rabat’s objective is to position this stadium, as well as the future large stadium in Casablanca, as credible candidates to wrest the organization of the World Cup final from the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid. To this end, the Tangier stadium now incorporates two levels of VIP boxes, creating a more intimate and luxurious atmosphere, at the forefront of the new spaces dedicated to football.
