Marrakech to Build Sterilization Center to Address Stray Dog Problem

In Marrakech, the fight against stray dogs will take on a whole new dimension. A sustainable solution has been found to put an end to the repeated attacks of these animals in the ochre city that welcomes many national and foreign tourists.

A dog and cat sterilization center will soon be built in Marrakech. This is the solution found by the municipal council to try to put an end to the repeated attacks of these animals in the city. The commune has awarded the contract to a group of Moroccan architects. The latter is responsible for carrying out an environmental impact study and another technical study to monitor the construction work of the center. This project is being carried out in cooperation and coordination with the General Directorate of Local Authorities, the Prefectural Council of Marrakech, the Mechouar-Kasbah district and the associations working in this field.

The Marrakech City Council explains the rationale for the project: "Through the creation of this center, the municipality of Marrakech and its partners aim to address the problem of stray dogs and cats, by adopting a new approach that primarily aims to stop their reproduction and their ability to transmit diseases, by sterilizing them, vaccinating them against rabies and treating them against parasites, before returning them to their environment on the basis of the geographical dimension and their mode of circulation, and this in compliance with the principles of animal rights, in accordance with the requirements of the International Convention and the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the World Organization for Animal Health."
