Agadir to Build $1.8 Million Shelter for Stray Dogs and Cats Amid Rising Concerns

The Local Development Company Agadir Souss-Massa Aménagement has launched a call for tenders for the construction of a shelter for stray dogs and cats in the city.
The cost of the project is estimated at 18.5 million DH, according to details of the tender notice. The company that wins this notice will have to take care of the waterproofing, coating and plastering within a period of twelve months. The future Agadir shelter will be added to the one existing in Rabat to fight against the phenomenon of stray dogs, reports Medias24.
In recent years, the authorities have been overwhelmed by complaints from citizens and even tourists about attacks by stray dogs. In 2019, several ministries signed with the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA) and the National Council of the Order of Veterinarians of Morocco (OVM) an agreement for the vaccination, sterilization of stray dogs, as well as the construction of shelters "according to standards that respect animal welfare".
A national sterilization operation had been launched last August in Oujda, Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Agadir and Tangier, still with the aim of fighting against the proliferation of stray dogs. "Their importance lies in the surgical act of sterilization, vaccination against rabies, but also the convalescence of the animals," had supported Dr. Badre Tnacheri Ouazzani.
