Marrakech Struggles with Stray Dog Problem Despite Millions in Government Funding

The Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, revealed that the local authorities, particularly Marrakech, receive annual subsidies from the State to fight against the proliferation of stray dogs. But the phenomenon persists in the ochre city.
In response to a question from the parliamentary group of the Popular Movement, the Minister of the Interior stated that the municipal council of the city of Marrakech has received an annual allocation of 70 million dirhams over the past five years to fight against the proliferation of stray dogs and cats, specifying that the amount of this subsidy was 50 million dirhams in previous years.
These funds are intended for the purchase of vehicles and equipment for the collection and control of stray dogs and rabies, added Abdelouafi Laftit, indicating that the municipal council of Marrakech has already received this year the sum of 880,000 dirhams for the acquisition of two vehicles equipped with cages as well as technical equipment for the collection of stray dogs.
The proliferation of stray dogs in the streets and neighborhoods of Marrakech remains a problem to which the local authorities have not yet found a viable solution. These animals disturb the peace and threaten the safety of the people of Marrakech, who regularly suffer their attacks.
