Marrakech Airport Expansion to Boost Capacity Amid Record Traffic Growth

The expansion works of the Marrakech-Menara airport will start very soon. The objective is to quickly strengthen the reception capacity of this airport which is experiencing record air traffic.
The National Airports Office (ONDA) has announced that it has already selected a consulting firm to supervise the expansion works of the Marrakech-Menara airport and that it will soon launch a call for tenders to select the company that will carry out the said works.
The project to extend this airport will essentially consist of a redesign of terminals 1 and 2, whose areas will be reviewed in order to accommodate the significant flow of travelers expected in the coming months, reports SNRT News. The work also includes doubling the lanes leading to the runway to facilitate boarding, as well as an expansion of the aircraft parking area and the installation of 40 hangars dedicated to medium-sized aircraft.
The construction of a new airport outside the ochre city, in the Sidi Zouine region, was planned to decongest the Marrakech airport, which is very busy. But the project has apparently been abandoned in favor of the extension of the Marrakech airport, whose passenger air traffic has increased by 22% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
The Marrakech-Menara infrastructure is under heavy pressure throughout the year, especially during vacation periods. The extension work will help remedy this situation and offer better reception conditions for travelers.
