Tangier’s Ibn Batouta Airport Undergoes $228 Million Expansion to Triple Capacity by 2050

The extension work on the Ibn Batouta international airport in Tangier is intended to accommodate 4.4 million passengers per year by 2050.
It is a 2.28 billion dirham (MMDH) project. The expansion work on the Ibn Batouta international airport in Tangier is intended to transform the airport into a modern hub. They must guarantee the reception of 4.4 million passengers per year by 2050 against 1.2 million currently, or three times its capacity, reports Médias 24. The area of the project is approximately 199 hectares. It is planned to build the basic infrastructure such as an aircraft parking area and circulation lanes on an area of about 160,000 m², a boarding hall with an area of nearly 55,000 m², a new control tower with the associated equipment, but also the extension and construction of an airport fence over a length of 6 km, as well as the installation of a new road leading to the airport and a parking lot capable of accommodating up to 1,400 vehicles, not to mention the control areas and spaces dedicated to baggage check-in. The construction site should last 48 months.
Tangier will contribute nearly 13 million dirhams (MDH) to the realization of the project. Under the multi-party agreement, adopted during the ordinary session of May, the municipality will be responsible for carrying out the necessary road and multimodal connection infrastructure to connect the airport to the various centers of importance in Tangier. The National Airports Office (ONDA) will be responsible for mobilizing the financial resources necessary for the studies and works. As for the Ministry of the Interior, it will ensure the integration of the security device needs in the architectural plans. The Ministry of Transport and Logistics will, for its part, ensure the management of the aspects related to land ownership. Other ministries, such as those of Economy and Finance, Equipment and Water, will also support the project.
