Marrakech Airport Struggles with Surging Tourist Traffic, Calls for Expansion Grow
The record influx of passengers noted last Sunday at the Marrakech-Menara airport serves as a reminder of the urgent need to increase the capacity of this airport infrastructure to contain the constantly increasing flow of passengers since the beginning of this year.
Passenger traffic at Marrakech airport increased by 22% between January 1 and March 31, 2024, compared to the same period in 2023 where traffic had increased by 41% compared to 2022. Last Sunday, the airport authorities were surprised by the record influx of passengers. Images that have gone viral on social media show long queues in the baggage claim hall of this airport.
This massive congestion is proof that Morocco, and mainly Marrakech, remains a very popular destination for foreign tourists since the lifting of Covid-19 health measures. To manage the massive influx of passengers, the Moroccan authorities are considering undertaking extension work on the Marrakech airport, in the perspective of the 2030 World Cup co-organized with Spain and Portugal. The National Airports Office (ONDA) is preparing to launch a call for tenders in this direction.
