Marrakech Airport: 61% of Departures Delayed on Sunday

Delays piled up at Marrakech-Menara on Sunday, October 4. By late evening, 61% of departures were reported delayed, with some European flights running nearly two hours behind schedule.

Marrakech Airport: 61% of Departures Delayed on Sunday

The Flightradar24 tally showed 75 delayed flights and two cancellations. Behind those figures, delays varied considerably by destination and airline.

Among the most delayed departures, easyJet flight U21254 to Basel left Marrakech one hour and 57 minutes late. Ryanair’s flight to Turin took off one hour and 22 minutes after its scheduled departure.

Bucharest was also affected: Wizz Air flight W43272 departed one hour and 54 minutes behind schedule. The airline had just resumed this route on September 20, after a summer break. Operating on Thursdays and Sundays, it is due to increase to three weekly flights from October 26. Wizz Air also plans to connect Marrakech with Cluj-Napoca this fall.

Several flights to France affected

Routes to France were also affected. Transavia recorded a delay of one hour and 16 minutes on its flight to Paris-Orly and one hour and five minutes to Rennes. Air France’s flight to Roissy departed 43 minutes late.

At easyJet, flight U26025 to Toulouse was canceled. Not all delays were that long, however: the average delay reported by late evening was 20 minutes.

Marrakech is also preparing to expand its airport. A €270 million financing agreement signed on September 30 with the African Development Bank covers the airports of Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier and Fez. At Marrakech-Menara, the program aims to raise annual capacity to 14 million passengers by 2030.

The work includes a new control tower and expanded facilities. The financing is also expected to fund baggage-handling automation and the replacement of security equipment in the terminals.
