The delegation took part in the international seminar organized by AAPA LATAM from September 28 to October 2 in Tangier and Madrid. In its review published on October 6, Data Portuaria looks back at the visits, which were intended to inform the projects of Latin American port officials.

At Tanger Med, the visitors toured the container terminals, facilities for vehicles and passengers, and the industrial and logistics zones. They notably studied how the complex attracts investment and organizes its various activities.

Discussions with Moroccan teams also covered financing, governance and the gradual development of infrastructure. Arrangements associated with the special zone were among the topics examined, the Argentine media outlet GlobalPorts reports.

The visit comes as Tanger Med handled more than 11 million TEUs in 2025. The Moroccan complex reached 16th place worldwide, ahead of Los Angeles in Lloyd’s List’s 2026 ranking, based on cargo volumes handled.

Two Moroccan ports offer different lessons

Before visiting Tanger Med, the delegation had explored Tanger Ville. There, attention focused on passenger transport activities and the transformation of the waterfront. The visitors examined the links between port facilities, urban development and the city’s economic growth.

The Moroccan itinerary thus offered a chance to observe two different functions: the organization of a major industrial and logistics complex at Tanger Med, followed by the integration of a port into its urban surroundings at Tanger Ville. These issues informed discussions on planning and land use in port cities.

The delegation then traveled to Madrid, where it met with Puertos del Estado and Spanish port authorities. The closing day focused on the organization of the Spanish system, investment and opportunities for cooperation with Latin America.

The seminar ended with a session in which each participant presented a priority and an action to pursue after the visits. AAPA LATAM is extending the trip with an institutional tour involving other European port stakeholders.
