Tanger Med Ranks 6th Globally Among World’s Top Container Ports

Tanger Med remains in the very exclusive circle of the world’s most efficient container ports. The Moroccan port ranks sixth in the Container Port Performance Index 2025, with a score of 134 points, compared to 136 points in 2024. Despite this slight decline, it maintains a leading position in a hierarchy dominated by Asian ports.

The ranking places Fuzhou, in China, at the top with 145 points, ahead of Dalian, also in China, Salalah, in Oman, then the Chinese ports of Mawan and Chiwan. Tanger Med comes just behind, ahead of Ningbo, Hamad Port, Hong Kong and Kobe. This position confirms the weight of the Moroccan port on major international maritime routes, particularly for transshipment and trade between Europe, Africa and Asia.

The CPPI measures container port performance based on the time ships spend in port. The index takes into account the time between the ship’s arrival in the port area or at anchorage and its departure from the berth. It is therefore not just a ranking of size or volume, but an indicator of operational fluidity.

For Tanger Med, the result is all the more notable as the 2025 ranking comes in a more difficult global context. The report notes a slight deterioration in the global average compared to 2024, a sign that supply chains remain under pressure. Ports must contend with delays, grouped ship arrivals, geopolitical tensions and disruptions related to maritime routes.

The Moroccan port also displays rare consistency over several years. Its score was 133 in 2020, 128 in 2021, 125 in 2022, before rising to 139 in 2023, then 136 in 2024 and 134 in 2025. This stability sets it apart in a sector where rankings can vary greatly from year to year depending on congestion, berth availability, handling equipment and terminal organization.

The report emphasizes that the highest-ranked ports are generally able to reduce waiting times, optimize loading and unloading operations, and better coordinate port stakeholders. Performance also depends on infrastructure, crane intensity, digital systems and connections with the hinterland.

With this sixth place globally, Tanger Med confirms its strategic role for Morocco. The port remains the leading African representative in the upper rankings and continues to establish itself as one of the main logistics hubs in the Mediterranean and global maritime trade.
