Morocco’s Tanger Med Port Ranks 4th Globally in Container Performance Index

The port of Tanger Med maintains its position in the world’s top 4, and for the second consecutive year, outperforms all ports in Africa, Europe and the MENA region.
The port of Tanger Med ranks fourth in the global Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) for the year 2023, developed by the World Bank (WB) and S&P Global Market Intelligence, thus outperforming, for the second year, all ports in Africa, Europe and the MENA region, including Algeciras (10th), Hamad Port (Qatar, 11th), Port Said (Egypt, 16th), Khalifa Port (Abu Dhabi, 29th), King Abdullah Port (Saudi Arabia, 30th), or the Port of Barcelona (Spain, 34th). The Yangshan port in China takes the first place. Then come the ports of Salalah (Oman) and Cartagena (Colombia). The Tanjung Pelepas port (Malaysia) completes the top 5 of the most efficient ports. The ports of East and Southeast Asia dominate the ranking, occupying 13 of the top 20 places globally.
"Even though the difficulties and shockwaves caused by the Covid-19 pandemic have further subsided in 2023, container shipping remains an unpredictable and volatile sector," says Martin Humphreys, Lead Transport Economist at the World Bank in a statement. He will add: "Major ports need to invest in resilience, new technologies and green infrastructure to ensure the stability of global markets and the sustainability of the shipping industry."
A comparative tool intended to serve as a benchmark for key players in the global economy: states, port authorities, development agencies, supranational organizations and private operators working in trade, logistics and supply chains, the CPPI ranks 405 container ports worldwide based on their efficiency, measured in particular by the length of stay of ships.
