Tanger Med in the global top

Tanger Med joins the global top 20 container ports, while its integration into this ranking was initially planned for 2027. A historic breakthrough.
Tanger Med rises to 19th place in the global top 20 container ports, established by Alphaliner and published in March 2024. The port thus gains three places compared to the previous year. This historic breakthrough is due to the performance recorded last year. In total, 8,617,410 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) containers were handled in the port complex in 2023 against 7,596,800 TEU containers in 2022, i.e. a growth of 13.4%. These containers handled are equivalent to 95% of its nominal capacity.
"The progress is due to the good performance of the TC1 and TC4 terminals, operated by Maersk-APM, and the continuous ramp-up of the TC3 terminal, operated by Tanger Alliance (JV 50% owned by Marsa Maroc, and with Eurogate as a 40% partner and Hapag Lloyd as a 10% partner)," Tanger Med Port Authority had explained in its report published at the end of January. And to add: "The year 2023 also recorded record productivity levels exceeding monthly peaks of 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled".
With a total of 49,158,000 containers handled, the port of Shanghai tops the ranking. It is followed by the port of Singapore, where 39,012,954 containers were handled last year. The Chinese port of Ningbo-zhoushan completes the top 3 with a total of 35,300,000 containers.
