Morocco’s Tanger Med Port Enters Global Top 20, Sees Record Growth in 2023

The Tanger Med port achieved record figures in 2023, a year in which it managed to "establish its dominance in the Mediterranean" and enter the Top 20 global container ports.
Tanger Med occupies the 19th place in this ranking established by the French firm Alphaliner. With a 13.4% increase in container volumes handled compared to 2022, the Moroccan port has achieved one of the best growths in the ranking. In five years, Tanger Med’s traffic has more than doubled, becoming a serious competitor to the ports of Long Beach (California, USA), Laem Chabang (Thailand) and Kaohsiung (Taiwan), reports the newspaper Le Monde, adding that "the results of the beginning of this year are still encouraging".
As the main transshipment hub for goods from China, the Moroccan port has also been able to take advantage of the recent upheavals in the Red Sea, caused by the attacks of the Houthi rebels, in support of Palestine. Thus, a 10% increase in the overall tonnage handled in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 is expected, said Rachid Houari, Deputy Managing
