Tanger Med Surpasses Los Angeles and Becomes the World’s 16th-Busiest Container Port

The new ranking of the world’s top 100 container ports published by Lloyd’s List places Tanger Med between the Chinese port of Xiamen, in 15th place, and Thailand’s Laem Chabang, in 17th. Los Angeles falls behind them into 18th place.

Tanger Med still ranked 17th in the previous edition, just behind Los Angeles. The Moroccan port has therefore reversed the order by moving up one place, thanks to the 11,106,164 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled in 2025.

This volume, already announced in February, represents an increase of 8.4% in one year. It enabled Tanger Med to surpass the threshold of eleven million containers for the first time.

Thirty places ahead of Algeciras

The new ranking also confirms the gap with Spanish ports. Valencia appears in 40th place, while Algeciras comes only in 46th, thirty positions behind Tanger Med. Barcelona is 60th.

The Moroccan complex thus retains its status as Africa and the Mediterranean’s leading container port. This ranking is based solely on the volumes handled in 2025 and should not be confused with the global port performance ranking, in which Tanger Med ranked sixth last June.

Globally, Asian ports continue to dominate by a very wide margin. Shanghai retains first place with more than 55 million TEUs, ahead of Singapore and Ningbo-Zhoushan. Rotterdam, the ranking’s leading European port, is in 12th place, followed by Antwerp-Bruges in 13th.

Surpassing Los Angeles marks a new stage in Tanger Med’s rise. In 2024, the Californian port had still handled 10.29 million TEUs, compared with 10.24 million for its Moroccan rival. A year later, Tanger Med has moved ahead and now ranks among the planet’s sixteen largest container ports.
