UK Issues Travel Advisory for Morocco Amid Potential Protests

The Foreign Office (UK Foreign Office) has issued specific recommendations for British nationals currently in Morocco or planning to go there.

Morocco is one of the favorite tourist destinations for the British. They have received an important warning regarding their safety. The Foreign Office (UK Foreign Office) has advised its nationals to avoid places where political demonstrations are organized. "Protests and demonstrations may take place throughout the country, particularly in major cities, often without warning. These events are generally closely monitored by the security forces. While authorized demonstrations are generally peaceful, unauthorized ones have sometimes led to clashes between protesters and the police. Such gatherings can disrupt travel in the affected areas. Avoid political gatherings and demonstrations and follow local news and security officials’ guidance."

The Foreign Office also warns the British against the existence of a terrorist threat. "It is highly likely that terrorists will try to carry out attacks in Morocco. Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals, such as transport hubs, places frequented by tourists and foreigners, government buildings, crowded places and businesses with Western interests," it specifies. It will add: "There is an increased threat due to the number of Moroccans sympathizing with or belonging to Daesh (former IS) and other extremist groups. The authorities regularly dismantle terrorist cells. In some places, especially in hotels and tourist sites, there may be protective security measures, including security guards."

The Foreign Office also warns about crime risks: "There may be occasional violent crimes in Morocco. Criminals have used knives against tourists in street attacks, thefts and burglaries in major cities and along beaches." To reduce the risks, it invites the British to avoid quiet areas, especially after dark, and not to carry large sums of money or valuables. "Petty crime is common in tourist areas, including in historic quarters (medinas) and on beaches. Crimes include pickpocketing, bag snatching and motorcycle theft of jewelry and visible handbags. [...] Be careful when asking for directions and when using ATMs: aggressive begging is common," completes the British Foreign Minister.

According to the Foreign Office, credit card fraud and scams are common in Morocco. It therefore invites British nationals to beware of scammers who replace the quality products you have "bought with inferior ones. Be vigilant against potential abuses of trust." It continues: "It is common for people posing as official tourist guides to harass tourists. If you use a guide in a historic quarter (Medina quarter), make sure they have an official badge and authorization from the local authorities. [...] Be cautious if you are going to Morocco for a relationship or to meet someone you have met online. Cases of fraudulent marriages and extortion attempts have affected British nationals. Make sure to keep your return ticket, passport and personal effects in a safe place."
