Internet Usage Surges 155% in 2020 as Pandemic Drives Digital Shift

Data consumption increased by 155% in 2020 due to confinement, according to figures from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT). With the widespread availability of internet access for remote work, the internet penetration rate is now 83%.
In total, nearly 30 million internet (fixed and mobile) subscribers were recorded at the end of December 2020, an increase of 17% or 4.4 million additional subscriptions.
As for mobile internet, it recorded an increase of more than 17% and totals more than 27.74 million subscribers. Regarding the 4G mobile internet park, it shows an increase of more than 30% to reach nearly 20.5 million.
The explosion in consumption is also remarkable at the level of fiber optics. The FITCH (fiber optic) park has a growth rate of nearly 80% over a year and exceeds 218,000 subscribers, according to ANRT data. As for the ADSL park, it stands at 1.6 million at the end of 2020 against 1.47 million in 2019.
