Historic Agadir Kasbah Restoration Underway in Morocco

The rehabilitation work on the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella, recently launched, respects the specific modern techniques of the archaeology of heritage buildings. Classified as a Moroccan historical monument in 1932, and ravaged by the earthquake of February 29, 1960, this site will rise from the ashes.
A first restitution of the execution of the work was made on Thursday, by the committee responsible for accompanying the project in all its stages, during a press conference. The work, which started after Eid Al Adha, is already showing notable progress, particularly "the facade on the city and the sea, which are the most delicate, and then the other facades."
According to a report published on this occasion, the seven weeks of work carried out (between June 1 and July 23, 2020) concerned the preventive excavations and the related samples, as well as surveys in the surroundings to ensure the restoration of the ramparts by a complete preliminary documentation.
The Kasbah of Agadir has embodied for more than six centuries the importance of a port at the outlet of the great continental routes that linked the Sahara and Europe, Africa and Asia. Today, sixty years after the terrible earthquake that shook the city, it has been decided to give this emblematic site of Moroccan history "a new life", in "respect of the international protocols of post-disaster heritage interventions". Among the important points of the restoration and rehabilitation work of the historic site of Agadir Oufella, we could note the restitution of the ramparts according to the protocol of building archaeology, the reorganization of the accesses during the work of the main gate. Also, the scientific committee composed of archaeologists and historians specialized in historical fortified structures, must take into account "the adequate safety conditions" in restoring the fortress and propose visiting routes that carry the meaning of the place.
